Dear MoveOn member,
A new Washington Post poll shows that Donald Trump's billionaire-backed budget bill is deeply unpopular among voters.1
But there's a big caveat: The bill is deeply unpopular among the voters who have heard about it.
In the middle of Trump's threatening to join the bombing of Iran, the despicable torrent of ICE raids that are tearing families apart, the storm of deploying the National Guard to Southern California, and widespread protest, two-thirds of voters have "heard little or nothing at all" about the budget bill that will fundamentally change how government supports the American people.2
The good news is that once people are told about specific policies in the bill, they really, really oppose them.
Only 17% of people want to decrease Medicaid funding.3 Fewer than that want to spend more money on ICE and detention centers while cutting food assistance for people in need.4 Extending the Trump tax breaks for the wealthy is now firmly unpopular with 3 out of 4 people.5
It turns out that—across party lines—once people are informed about what Trump and his MAGA Congress are actually doing with the budget bill, they don't want to give up a government for the people in favor of a government for corporations and the wealthy. And the more people know about the bill, the more they are willing to act. It's just a matter of informing them.
We have just a few weeks to put a stop to Trump's budget bill, and that means leveraging the mass mobilization we've been building and our media reach to make the budget bill a poison pill that Congress can't pass.
Cassandra, once Trump's budget bill passes, there is no going back. Will you donate $9 to MoveOn and help stop this awful bill that will rip away health care, food assistance, and other critical benefits from millions of us? (If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately.)
We've known for a long time that access to services including SNAP, Medicaid, Social Security, and more are deeply ingrained in the fabric of what it means to be an American. So it's no surprise that Trump's policies are unpopular to those who know about them.
What's concerning is that the people who don't know about the bill—as many as 1 in 4 know nothing about what is actually in the legislation—are much more likely to support the bill, despite not knowing what's in it.6
Even worse, nearly half of voters still say that the budget bill will either have no impact on their lives or will actually help them.7 We know nothing could be further from the truth.
But with the chaos and mayhem Trump has created in the last few weeks, breaking through the noise is more difficult than ever.
We certainly can't count on corporate media to inform the public. In the past two weeks, CNN has mentioned Medicaid only a dozen times a day, across all programming. Fox mentioned it an average of only four times in the span of 24 hours.8
It's up to us.
We need to make sure as many people as possible know about what is at stake, which is why we are holding public events calling out senators for threatening our well-being with their terrible budget cuts and running social media ads, billboards, and other public outreach to inform the public about the direct impact of the budget bill.
Make no mistake, Cassandra, this bill isn't just a series of budget cuts and tax breaks. The bill is a fundamental reshaping of how our government works—a total shifting of wealth and power away from the people and into the hands of corporations and a handful of billionaires. Every tool we have to overcome adversity and achieve equity, from education to our safety net to Social Security, will be impacted. We can't wait until it passes to fight back.
We can stop Trump's budget bill by mobilizing against it, but this work takes vast resources. Will you donate $9 to MoveOn and help see it through? (If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately.)
Thanks for all you do.
