Republicans are moving quickly to pass legislation that could prevent millions of currently eligible voters from voting in future elections.1 They've flooded the zone with multiple bills, mirroring the SAVE Act, all requiring people to prove their citizenship when registering or reregistering to vote by providing a passport or original birth certificate.
The problem is millions of Americans do not have access to these documents.2 And Republicans and Trump know this. This is blatant voter suppression and we must push back now.
The House of Representatives is voting this Wednesday on the so-called Save America Act and the Senate will quickly follow suit. Proponents of these bills have driven thousands of calls to the House and Senate, so it's critical that they hear from their pro-democracy constituents now!
Will you call your members of Congress right now to demand that they vote no on the SAVE Act in all of its forms?
First call your representative, as they will be voting this week. Dial 1-833-932-0171 and then follow the prompt to enter your Zip code. You'll be automatically connected.
Then, call your both of your senators to ensure they know their constituents reject these bills. Dial 1-833-933-0108 to be automatically connected to their offices.
You can say something like this:
"Hi, my name is _____ and I'm from [city, state]. I'm calling to urge [member of Congress name] to vote no on the SAVE Act in all of its forms, including the Save America Act and MEGA. These bills would prevent millions of currently eligible people from voting—stripping away a fundamental right. Congress should be supporting and encouraging every eligible person in our country to vote. These are blatant voter suppression bills and must be rejected. Thank you."
Currently, 21 million U.S. citizens of voting age do not have proof of citizenship readily available.3 More than half of Americans—over 150 million people—do not have a passport, and millions lack access to a paper copy of their birth certificate.3 And if any of these bills pass, tens of millions of people, primarily women who changed their last name after getting married, could be disenfranchised because their name no longer matches their birth certificate.4
The requirement to present these documents when registering or reregistering to vote could mean a great nuisance for some, but for others, it could mean barriers that are too high or impossible to overcome. It would particularly impact low-income voters and the millions upon millions of people who have ever changed their last name through marriage, as well as young people, people living in rural communities, people living on tribal lands, unhoused people, and, disproportionately, people of color.
Republicans say these bills would prevent non-citizens from registering to vote, but that is already illegal and has been widely debunked.5,6 We won't stand by while they scapegoat immigrants in our communities in attempts to strip away millions of our voting rights.
Republicans and Trump would rather continue spouting lies about voter fraud and stolen elections than actually governing for the people. They are losing and instead of being held accountable, they want to rig the rules to stay in power. They are laying the groundwork now to interfere in this election from all angles and attempting to pass these voter suppression bills is just one of them.
But in this country, voters choose our leaders, not the other way around. It's clear that they are afraid of us and that they're trying to rig the rules because they believe they can't win fair and square.
Please call your members of Congress right now to demand that they reject the SAVE Act in all of its forms!
