Almost 250 years after we broke with George III, the question must now be faced: Are we a monarchy or a nation of laws?
That is not a rhetorical question. Last week, Donald Trump started a war with Iran—without consulting Congress, without notifying Congress, without explaining to the American people why we were bombing another country.
No debate. No vote. No accountability. Just a president doing whatever he wants, to whomever he wants, whenever he wants.
That is not how a democracy works. That is how a monarchy works.
War is a critical part of the authoritarian playbook. War takes over the news. War blots out criticism. War grants leaders all sorts of emergency powers. War costs an unthinkable amount of lives and an unthinkable amount of money. War consumes everything else. We must not let this war do that.
And Iran is not the only front. Every week brings new outrages—freedoms erased by executive action, judges defied, political enemies targeted, democratic norms shredded.
Trump is daring us to stop him.
And we can—if we keep growing the pro-democracy movement. But our numbers aren't big enough yet. That's why No Kings Day on March 28 is so critical.

Here's what big days of action do that nothing else can: They reach people who are still on the sidelines. Not only the already converted. Not only the people already reading this email. No Kings has the potential to reach the folks who are angry but isolated, who think they're alone in what they're feeling.
When they see events being organized on their main street, when they see people they know saying they are going, something shifts. They realize resistance isn't fringe—it's everywhere. And they take their first step.
That's how movements grow. That's how we build the numbers we need.

MoveOn has been doing this work for more than 25 years. They can reach people in every corner of the country. But they need the resources to do it at the scale this moment demands.
This is the most dangerous moment for American democracy in my lifetime. Trump is more emboldened. His allies in Congress are more compliant. The checks on his power are weaker. And he now commands the military and has shown he will use it—unilaterally, without asking anyone's permission.
As we resist tyranny, America gains solidarity. As we gain solidarity, we build courage. As we feel courageous and stand up to Trump, we weaken him and his regime.
But solidarity has to be built. It doesn't appear on its own. It requires organizations with the capacity to find people where they are, speak to what they're feeling, and channel their fear and anger into collective action. There is no organization better than MoveOn at doing precisely that.
