MoveOn has been preparing for No Kings Day on March 28 for months now—because it is essential that our pro-democracy movement keeps growing and getting stronger until we are so powerful that we can stop authoritarianism in America.
On that day, millions of us will be calling out all of the horrors of the Trump administration. The war in the Middle East none of us asked for. The unaffordability of health care, housing, and groceries. The Epstein files. The ICE raids and threats to our communities.
These are dangerous, dark times.
But we are not letting the Trump administration drag us into despair. In fact, we are going to meet Donald Trump and his cronies head-on with one of the greatest tools we have: joy.
Those who oppress us have always relied on the ability to make us feel hopeless and that there is nothing good to fight for.1 We refuse to feel that way. Joy and community are resistance in this moment.
That's why for this No Kings event, we are doing something different in order to build that community in advance, help bring more people into the No Kings movement, and keep people involved after—and you have an important part to play.
In the days before No Kings, MoveOn members across the nation will be hosting sign-making parties in order to encourage people in their communities—whether first-time protesters or seasoned marchers—to come together and build joy and community that will radiate throughout the protests and long after.
To help support the MoveOn members hosting these sign parties, we're sending them sign-making kits of posterboard, markers, stencils, and everything else they need! Each of these kits costs $50. Millions of people will take to the streets on March 28. In fact, more than 2,540 events are already planned in all 50 states!
We need to keep building this pro-democracy movement until we reach a tipping point when the people of the United States grow more powerful than Trump and MAGA authoritarianism.
MoveOn is one of the core organizations making it happen—working one-on-one with thousands of volunteer hosts, running trainings, building and maintaining the technology infrastructure to coordinate thousands of safe and nonviolent events on a single day, leading the flagship event in the Twin Cities along with groups on the ground, and getting the word out to the media and people everywhere.
Last June, 3 million of us came together for the first No Kings. Then, 7 million in October. And now, March 28 is on track to be the largest No Kings mobilization yet—and largest nonviolent demonstration in U.S. history.
But joining a protest of this magnitude can be intimidating for those who haven't done it before, and our sign-making parties are a great low-key, friendly way to dip their toes in ahead of the big day. And then to build bonds that last long after.
By helping MoveOn members invite their circle of friends, neighbors, and family to join them in the joy of creativity and passion—because that's what signs are for!—we can build the pro-democracy movement.
As Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez once said, "You are allowed to cultivate joy. In fact, you need to."2
