Dear MoveOn member,
For generations, buying a home was a rite of passage. Now that American dream is quickly slipping away.
And it's not just first-time buyers feeling the strain of the housing crisis. Renters, homeowners, young people, retirees—people of all ages, in every part of the country, are feeling the squeeze. The cost of housing has dramatically outpaced what Americans actually earn, and the gap keeps widening. Rent prices have increased an average of 36% since 2020, with some areas seeing increases over 50%.1 And the U.S. has a shortage of over 4 million homes.2
Housing is a human right. Sign the petition to demand access to affordable housing for all!
For millions of Americans, the path forward feels completely blocked. One in three young adults are living with their parents well into adulthood.3 And the median age of the average homebuyer is now 40, an all-time high.4
While homeownership is becoming more and more unattainable for a majority of Americans, renting isn’t any better. Renters are spending more than they can afford just to keep a roof over their heads, with half of American renters spending over one-third of their income on housing, and more than a quarter of renters spend over half their income on housing.5 Renters in the lowest income bracket have an average of just $250 left every month after paying for housing.6
In the richest country in the world, people are being forced to choose between paying rent and buying groceries. Homelessness is at an all-time high. And owning a home is quickly becoming an aspirational luxury.
This isn’t a new problem. Republicans in Congress have spent years choosing tax cuts for the wealthy over investments in affordable housing. Donald Trump’s tariffs on lumber, steel, and other construction materials are driving up the cost of new housing construction, which will result in an estimated 450,000 fewer homes being built in the next five years.7 And now his war with Iran is causing increased transportation costs, driving building prices up even further.8
Trump ran on an affordability agenda, but his policies and the priorities of the Republican-controlled Congress are only making this crisis worse. Congress has the power to expand assistance for first-time homebuyers, invest in affordable housing construction, strengthen rental assistance programs, and stop corporate investors from treating our neighborhoods like profit opportunities. They're just choosing not to.
Something must change. Sign the petition and demand Congress end the housing crisis now. Then share the petition with three friends to help spread the word.
Thanks for all you do.
