Dear MoveOn member,
This week’s Louisiana v. Callais decision eviscerates our nation’s most sacred civil rights protection—Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.1 Fair districts across the nation will vanish as corrupt politicians move to gut representation for voters—disproportionately for people of color—without any checks and balances from the highest court.
The Supreme Court should rule for the people, not for the rich and powerful. SCOTUS cannot go on any longer without serious reform. It’s not enough to wait until Democrats have another chance to nominate a justice—we must expand the representation and balance of the court.
Our democracy is only real if Black and brown people have a fair say in our elections. We will continue to fight for the multiracial future of our country and genuine representation in our leaders. And we can start by reclaiming and expanding the courts. Will you sign the petition?
With Louisiana v. Callais, the conservative justices have delivered a decision that threatens to further divide our nation and entrench power in the hands of the wealthy and powerful few. It’s unacceptable—politicians should not choose their voters, voters should choose their politicians. And the Supreme Court should uphold that.
We have 13 circuit courts that represent the nation, and only nine Supreme Court justices. We need to expand the court to 13 justices to fairly represent Americans and the values across the nation.
This out-of-touch Supreme Court does not represent the American people. Will you sign the petition now to support expanding the court?
Over decades, the Supreme Court has been packed in order to push the right-wing agenda—and by presidents who haven’t represented a majority of Americans. Starting with George W. Bush, who nominated two justices despite losing the popular vote, followed by Trump who nominated two justices in order to overturn Roe v. Wade.2
In 2018, led by Mitch McConnell, the Senate blocked President Obama’s final Supreme Court nominee for more than nine months, never holding a single hearing, much less a vote.3 This court has been unfairly rigged to stop us from making progress. Instead, it has taken us backward, giving presidents nearly unlimited power and ruling to take away our rights.
We need every elected leader to be speaking out about the need to reform the Supreme Court. This court has gone on for far too long without any form of checks and balances. We must keep up the pressure and demand that those in power make swift changes to the Supreme Court!
Add your name to the petition to expand the Supreme Court, and share with three friends NOW!
Thanks for all you do.
