Dear MoveOn member,
Once again, Republicans in Congress are trying to make it harder for us to vote.
This week, the House of Representatives passed a federal photo ID requirement that is harsher than any existing state voter ID law in what appeared to be an insider trading ban bill. They also voted to require people to prove their citizenship when registering to vote by providing documents that millions of eligible voters do not have, with the passage of the National Defense Authorization Act.1
In another desperate attempt to keep us from voting and to control the outcome of our elections, Republicans are sneaking key elements of the SAVE Act, the most egregious voter suppression bill in modern history, into other legislation to try and pass it before November’s election.
If Trump gets his way and the SAVE Act in any form passes in the Senate and becomes law, millions of eligible voters will not be able to vote in November. We have a small window to make our voices heard to ensure these bills don’t go any further. Email your senators now to demand they reject these sinister attempts to take away our right to vote.
No matter the name or how it’s disguised, these new bills are part of the same tired effort by Trump and Republicans to keep millions of eligible voters from casting their ballots.
Real leaders work to earn our vote. Authoritarians work to keep us from voting. This is about keeping voters from casting ballots, to maintain power. Not protecting our elections.
To that we say, hands off our vote! Will you send an email to your senators to demand they reject the SAVE Act in all its forms and any legislation that makes it more difficult for people to vote?
Voter suppression is their playbook, and that’s why MoveOn members have been sounding the alarm on the dangers of the SAVE Act in all of its forms for over a year. Here’s what the SAVE Act would do:
Require proof of citizenship to register—a drivers license wouldn’t count2
Require voters to present a government issued physical photo ID for in-person voting and to enclose paper copies of their photo ID when voting by mail3
Eliminate online voter registration, requiring in-person registration4
Hold volunteer election workers criminally liable if they make mistakes5
Force states to submit its voter registration list to Trump’s Department of Homeland Security, with no safeguards on how data can be used6
Nearly 21 million U.S. citizens of voting age do not have proof of citizenship readily available, only about half of American adults have a passport, and millions lack access to a paper copy of their birth certificate. Similarly, millions of Americans do not have access to the narrow range of acceptable documents to meet the proposed voter ID laws to be able to cast their ballots.7
The requirement to obtain and present these documents in person when registering and voting could result in millions of currently eligible citizens not being able to vote. It would particularly impact low-income voters and the millions upon millions of women who have changed their last name through marriage, as well as young people, rural communities, and, disproportionately, people of color.
Send an email to your senators now to demand they vote no on any legislation that includes any version of the SAVE Act and threatens our right to vote.
The SAVE Act is designed to keep us from voting. But voters choose their leaders. Not the other way around. We will continue to work until every eligible voter can freely cast their ballot.
