In fact, these kinds of arrangements used to be common for Americans of all ages, especially for people just starting in a new city. But dorm-style living, or even just renting a spare bedroom in a house, was systematically pushed out as a housing option in many places in the 20th century. That may be changing, Vox’s Rachel Cohen Booth writes, especially as housing affordability is becoming a bigger political issue.
